New Orleans celebrated a night of R&B when the Black Promoters Collective brought their Love Hard Tour to the Smoothie King Center on Friday night. The tour, which began in February, has brought singers K. Michelle, Jaheim, Trey Songz and Keyshia Cole to serenade audiences around the country.
The show began promptly at 8pm on the dot as opening act K. Michelle entered the stage wearing a red latex two piece set with two background dancers. The crowd cheered for her as she stepped up to her custom microphone stand performing the New Edition sampled “The Rain.” She sang a medley of her other songs including “Can’t Raise A Man” and “Love Em All” before closing her set with “VSOP.”
Following a brief intermission of a throwback R&B playlist of songs like “Lovers & Friends” and Tevin Campbell’s “Can We Talk”, the next act was up. Jaheim has been out of the spotlight for a while, but returned to the stage with the energy of a seasoned performer. He performed alongside a crew of female dancers singing songs from his decades long catalog including “Anything” and “Put That Woman” first. He ended his set with “Just In Case.”
After a changeover which included more instruments and musicians, the stage was set for R&B superstar Trey Songz. He entered to screams and cheers wearing a grey textured two piece set, dark sunglasses and a dazzling smile. He took it back to the introduction of his career with “Gotta Go” then moving into “Can’t Help But Wait” and “I Need A Girl”. He eventually lost the sunglasses and top half of his outfit as he continued through many of his hits including “I Invented Sex” and “Neighbors Know My Name.” The “Panty Dropper” singer lived up to his lyrics as someone threw a pair of underwear on stage to him. The crowd of mostly women lit up the arena with phone lights, screamed and sang along through the rest of his performance until he ended with the 2010 Nicki Minaj assisted hit “Bottoms Up.”
After Trey, the headliner of the night, Keyshia was next to perform. She entered with her male dancers and performed the first song from the back of the stage. She sparkled in a glittery silver jumpsuit with pink thigh high boots. She performed her songs including Last Night and “Shoulda Let You Go” as she hit the viral Lil Kim dance - an ode to the song’s collaborator. More songs from her set included “Heaven Sent” and “Give It Up To Me”. At the end of her performance, she closed the show with “Love” as the audience belted it out to the top of their lungs along with her.
