We’ve all been there - sitting on the couch, remote in hand, scrolling through endless titles on Netflix and finding nothing to watch. Luckily, there’s been a fair share of quality content released on Netflix recently. If you haven’t checked these out, then you should.
The Platform
This psychological thriller is one that will capture and hold your attention from beginning to end. It’s not a scary movie, but one that will intrigue you and make you think. The story is of prisoners in a “Vertical Self-Management Center” in which a platform table feast passes down vertically level by level feeding prisoners from top to bottom, with those on top getting first dibs, and everyone below getting what ever they leave behind. We meet our levelheaded main character, Goreng, and his cellmate who lets him know “Don’t pester those below, bc they’re below. The ones above won’t answer, because they are above, obviously.” This movie paints the picture of human nature, greed and the idea that if everyone only took what they needed, there would be enough for everyone. I give this movie a 9/10, only knocking off a point because I was disappointed in the ending.
Molly’s Song
This movie is based on the true story of Olympic skier turned author and leader of exclusive underground poker ring, Molly Bloom. The movie follows the events that led to Molly facing charges in criminal court for illegal gambling and money laundering and its proceedings. The film stars Jessica Chastain as Molly and Idris Alba.
All American
In case you haven’t gotten hooked on this show yet, All American is one to spend a few days binge watching. It follows Crenshaw native and high school football star, Spencer James, on his journey from the hood to switching homes and moving to Beverly Hills to play football. With all the drama in these characters’ stories, it’s hard to remember they’re only supposed to be in high school. There are two seasons of All American currently available for your binging pleasures.
Tiger King
Unless you live under a rock and have no social media at all, you’ve seen or heard of Tiger King already. If not, it’s time you catch up. There’s so much going on from the drug addict, polyamorous, country singing, mullet wearing zoo owner Joe Exotic to the perceived husband murdering woman everybody loves to hate, Carole Baskin. There are so many head scratching happenings that take place in this show, you’d just have to watch it to believe it. It’s wild, but entertaining, nonetheless.
